The Perfect Storm
In the UK it appears we now have a chief government scientist who is saying the things we at Peakfood have been saying for the past 3 years.
Professor John Beddington, who is an expert on the sustainable use of renewable resources, addressed environmental groups and politicians at a Westminster conference last month and told of a ‘ perfect storm’ of food shortages, scarce water and insufficient energy resources that threaten to unleash public unrest, cross-border conflicts and mass migration as people flee from the worst affected regions.
He suggested that demand for food and energy will jump 50% by 2030 and for fresh water by 30% as the population tops 8.3 billion. He also spoke of severe climatic changes with the South East of England being especially vulnerable to water shortages.
It’s great that we now have a chief scientist warning the government about these things. But will they listen?
