Australian Crazy Weather affecting Food Supplies

July 8, 2007 · Filed Under climate change

The long running Australian drought has helped to push up world grain prices as Australia went from being a major exporter of grain to having almost nothing to export. But today, a special report on climate change in the independent said,

“From the worst drought in a century to the worst floods in decades, Australians are wondering what will come next. Severe storms have battered the east coast, causing major flooding in New South Wales. In the low-lying Gippsland region of Victoria, hundreds of people had to abandon homes and businesses at the weekend after rivers burst their banks. Helicopters rescued residents as floods engulfed houses, barns and paddocks, leaving cattle stranded. Floods have also hit the Newcastle area, north of Sydney, leaving nine people dead. Another attempt is being made to refloat the Pasha Bulker, a coal freighter swept on to a sandbank just off a Newcastle beach three weeks ago.”

Despite those floods, farmers in the Murrat-Darling river basin have been banned from irrigating their fields in order to leave enough water for households. This area produces about 40% of Ausralia’s grain and without irrigation yields will be very poor. As climate change gets worse and extreme weather becomes evem more common, it will be almost impossible for the world to produce enough food.
